WASHINGTON -- IBM's Networking
Hardware Division introduced new
high-performance networking gear here at
ComNet '99 this week that makes good on
its strategy to become a significant Ethernet
provider and builds on its ATM history.

Among the new offerings is the IBM 8371
Multilayer Ethernet Switch, intended to
switch workgroup Ethernet traffic across an
ATM backbone. The wire-speed Layer 3
switch, the first of several planned, will
initially be delivered as a 16-port 10/100
chassis with expansion slots as well as a
16-port module for IBM's 8265 Nways
ATM backbone switch.

The expansion slots in the 8371 will
accommodate more 10/100 auto-sensing
ports and Gigabit Ethernet or ATM OC-12
uplinks.
