Dear KP,

I think the need for removable storage, and with the
current offerings that means Zip can do nothing but
greatly increase at least until the end of the year
due to Y2K worries. These may be founded or unfounded,
but it seems to me that ads that advise the PC owner to
back up their "stuff" couldn't hurt, with every day bringing
a Y2k story to their newspaper.
Even if they don't understand it, they'll want to back things
up just in case.
Also as an aside, my wife is in a graduate program and was
advised to get two zip disks, one for the current project,
to turn in, then one to work on the next project......
zip is the standard at least at Clarion University.....

KP; looking into whether the "new product" IOM is producing has to do with flash. ya just never know with these things. The Scottish engineers at Nomai must have been working on something (all this time).

Nomai has enlarged their CD-RW offering: nomai.com

noted is that Nomai continues to manufacture Syquest compatible disks (although this is for one earlier EZ version - doubt it would take much to gear Nomai to produce later Syquest version media.

they own 85% of the market, but have penetraded 7% of all sold (i.e., 7% of all box units sold will include, generally a zip drive). that leaves 93% left. as for the storage market being finite...weeell, it's infinite actually as far as time is infinite. the more time that passes, the more crap that needs stored, the more space needed to store. if you mean it's finite at any given time; yes, but, the full market hasn't been penetrated. nonetheless, phg is a likeable stock for some of the same reasons IOM is likable (emc and others).

I normally have a lot of respect for your bearish perspective, but I must disagree with the following statement:

The removable storage market is not a fixed size. It is growing. Before Iomega introduced the Zip, SyQuest and Iomega (basically the only two options) had a combined annual revenue of less than $500 million. Iomega didn't steal the removable market from SyQuest. They built a new market.

As someone else has also pointed out, Iomega is under 10% penetration in the PC market. There's still a lot of room for growth there.

Also, you can't think of removable storage only in terms of PC's. Iomega is now moving out of the box and into other devices. Digital cameras. PDA's. Printers. Scanners. GPS systems. The possibilities are endless.

And don't forget about the "New Ventures Group" that Iomega just implemented. I think you'll see them expanding into other markets in the near future.
