Michael, >>> CPQ definitely flooded the channel enough last quarter to beat their estimates. <<<

Kumar agrees.

>>>Piper Jaffray analyst Ashok Kumar believes that Compaq is "channel stuffing," or shipping excess inventory to the retail channel to inflate shipment figures....."We now estimate Compaq's PC sales-in level in the fourth-quarter is expected to be inflated by about two weeks of shipments," <<<

I'm not a big fan of Eckhard Pfeifer. I think he is basically a very ambitious salesman good at corporate infighting to get to where he is.

I'm skeptical of his technical vision vis a vis Michael Dell, Bill Gates, Craig Barrett et al and I doubt he has the financial acumen of a Lou Gerstner or Jack Welch. (Did you know that Welch has a Phd in material science?)

His relationship with the engineers from the Tandem acquisition from what I understand is strained. His strategy for positioning the Alpha chip is unclear. Altavista is just a windfall that fell into his greedy grasp. He had nothing to do with its development, but he is reaping the rewards. I guess sometimes it is better to be lucky than to be intelligent - but luck is a two edged sword, whereas, unless you are suffering from altsheimers - if you are intelligent today, you will be intelligent tomorrow.

Which brings to mind, my main point. Eckhard Pfeiffer is no Michael Dell. Dell has less than 10% of the market and he has a lot of room to grow - regardless of market conditions. He is going to report blow out numbers this quarter and the next.
