<However, it seems that Intel being burnt by the FDIV bug respond a bit too soon this time, IMO. I just don't see any technical problem of its original setting.>

You didn't see any technical problem at its original setting, but those wacky Big-Brother-phobes did, and they have some pretty loud voices.

Remember the well-publicized FDIV bug? I didn't see any real problem with the FDIV bug, since the consequences of it were much smaller than people made it out to be. However, the negative publicity became so bad that people perceived that Intel's processors couldn't even add. Intel stuck to the technically correct explanation, that only one-in-one-million users would truly need a fixed chip. That mistake cost Intel dearly. (I should know; I worked for Intel back then as an intern, and I kicked myself for not buying back then when the shares dipped due to the FDIV fiasco.)

In my opinion, Intel did the right thing by nipping this thing in the bud as quickly as possible. Of course, the wacky Big-Brother-phobes are still touting their "boycott Intel" slogans, but they're bound to fade away as Intel proves that they will listen to the consumer.
