Mary,

This is the compelling story of AOL. And to top it all off, there seems to be a well-thought-out overall plan. You take the position of strength AOL has already developed through advertising and through strategic alliances with computer manufacturers, make it more attractive to both the subscribers and the content providers, collect money from both, make it easier and faster for both sides to do business with each other, attract more customers through all of this and more strategic relationships, then add more and better content providers, and repeat.

This is a gross simplification of course, but it captures the excitement. AOL has a great big jump on this plan in the form of 15 million subscribers and good strategic relationships with PC companies like Dell and Compaq. There are many hurdles, including maintaining and increasing cash flow and earnings, finding the right broadband partners, choosing the right PC partners, finding the right advertising channels and so on but Steve Case and Company have shown themselves to be up to the task.
