No Debate in U.S. Capitol: 3Com Delivers Leading Converged
Networking Solutions to Small and Medium Enterprises
BW - 10:39 a.m. Jan 26, 1999 Eastern

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 26, 1999--3Com Corporation
(Nasdaq:COMS) today announced the SuperStack II PBX 1000, a fully featured PBX
system that allows companies to implement a no-compromise telephony and advanced
data communications solution.

Based on best-of-breed technology from Siemens AG and 3Com, the SuperStack II PBX
1000 helps growing businesses make the first migration step toward a single,
cost-effective and highly manageable voice, video and data network.

"3Com praises Siemens for its fundamental role in developing this joint solution -- we are
proud to deliver the first product resulting from our strategic relationship," said Edgar
Masri, senior vice president, enterprise business unit, 3Com.

"Reliable voice communications is one of the most important business requirements today
and customers should not sacrifice voice functionality to capitalize on the benefits of
convergence. The SuperStack II PBX 1000 gives customers perfect quality voice
communications with the functionality of a traditional PBX while adding features like
TAPI and CSTA support for integrated CTI applications. All this functionality is
integrated into the SuperStack family, 3Com's award-winning product line of
easy-to-manage and scaleable communications solutions."

"We are proud that the alliance with 3Com is delivering the right answers today to
address customers' demands for converged networking solutions," said Karl Hoenig,
head of Business Switching Networks Product Group of Siemens' Information and
Communication Networks Group.

"Together we will merge the advanced LAN technologies of 3Com with the leading
telecommunications capabilities of Siemens. With the SuperStack II and Hicom platforms
we offer customers a clear migration strategy to protect their investment, as they deploy
converged solutions."

3Com's Three-Phased Converged Networking Roadmap

Completing phase one of 3Com's three-phased convergence roadmap for enterprise
environments, the SuperStack II PBX 1000 delivers the physical integration of voice and
data network infrastructure. The SuperStack II PBX 1000 also provides the capability for
a single wide area connection for both voice and data traffic.

Phase two will deliver a unified enterprise infrastructure for voice and data
communications, using standards such as H.323 and JTAPI. Phase three will deliver the
applications that will drive convergence for true pervasive networking.

SuperStack II PBX 1000 System -- Migrating Small- and Medium-sized
Businesses to Converged Networking Today

Jeff Ingle, president, Optimal Solutions, Granville, Mich., and a user of the SuperStack
II PBX 1000 states, "Since we implemented the SuperStack II PBX 1000 in December
1998 we believe it is a vast improvement over our former Nortel Networks system. The
solution's ease-of-use capabilities in both configuration and management makes the
3Com system the highest quality data and voice solution available today."

The mission-critical quality of voice communications indicates that business convergence
adopters will need to strike a balance between ensuring their networks give 99.9999%
availability for voice calls while rolling out next-generation CTI applications. The 3Com
SuperStack II PBX 1000 delivers a converged voice and data workgroup solution
without sacrificing quality or reliability.

The system includes a stackable PBX 1000 unit and 3Com digital telephones. Following
are the solution's key features and customer benefits:

Ease-of-installation and day-to-day operations via the SuperStack II's stackable form
factor that enables easy attachment of telephone and trunk connections using RJ-11
connectors. Ensured compatibility today and in the future with support for all relevant
telecommunications industry and de-facto standards. Ease-of-management via
SNMP-manageable voice and data ports for local and remote management of the complete
SuperStack stack using a single management platform (available mid CY'99).

Integrated system saves customers money by allowing voice and data traffic to share the
same wide-area connection. Easy-to-use digital telephones give users one-touch access to
advanced caller functions and integrated PC dialing and phone book management. Easily
extensible architecture supports customization and integration with third-party
applications such as voice mail and automatic call distribution. Flexible and scaleable to
support a maximum configuration of 36 subscribers with 23 trunk lines.

Service and Support

The SuperStack II PBX 1000 is supported through a three-tiered support model essential
in addressing customer service level expectations for voice support. First-tier support is
provided through an authorized reseller channel throughout the USA; second-tier back up
reseller support will be handled by 3Com's Customer Service Organization; and third-tier
support is provided by Siemens and 3Com's Workgroup Systems division.

3Com is currently rolling out an authorization program for the reseller channel to offer
and support 3Com's converged networking solutions. For authorization, the reseller
must have or develop voice expertise and the ability to provide first-tier customer service
and support. The reseller authorization program for 3Com's converged networking
solutions features in-depth training on both the SuperStack II PBX 1000 and future
converged networking products from 3Com.

Pricing and Availability

Initial shipments of the SuperStack II PBX 1000 system to authorized U.S. resellers will
start on February 1, 1999 with general availability on March 1, 1999. As the company
rolls out the solution worldwide, specific details will be announced to coincide with
product availability.

The SuperStack II PBX 1000 is priced from $157 (USD) list price per subscriber based

channels). 3Com digital telephones start at $80 (USD) list price and additional subscriber
