Qualcomm Unveils Lighter Digital Phone to Rival Nokia (Update1)

(Updates with closing share price.)

San Diego, Jan. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc., a maker of cellular phones and network equipment, unveiled a lightweight digital phone to better compete with models from rivals
Nokia Oyj and Motorola Inc.

The Qualcomm Thin Phone weighs about four ounces and has a battery life of an estimated 10 hours talk time and eight days on standby. The phone also features an internal battery
that lets users swap external batteries during a conversation. Nokia, the world's largest cellular phone maker, and No. 3 Motorola Inc. have pushed aggressively in recent months into
the market for phones that use the code-division, multiple-access digital standard. Qualcomm, which first developed so-called CDMA, is betting the thin phone will it help hold onto
current customers and boost share among new users.

CDMA is the digital standard used by such wireless phone companies as Sprint PCS, AirTouch Communications Inc. and Bell Atlantic Corp. CDMA competes with time-division
multiple access, or TDMA, used by AT&T Corp. and SBC Communications Inc., as well as global system for mobile communications, or GSM, used mainly in Europe and by
companies like Omnipoint Corp. in the U.S. Qualcomm's new model is expected to appeal to users that want a phone with enhanced features such as caller identification, voice mail
and paging that they can carry with them anywhere. Cellular phone makers have been moving in recent months to develop phones that are lighter weight, have longer battery life and
are easier to use.

San Diego-based Qualcomm expects to begin shipping the Thin Phone, which will be available in five different colors, in the first half of this year.

''We think it's going to broaden the user base,'' said Jeffrey Belk, Qualcomm's vice president of marketing. ''Over time, we think it will be our most popular unit.''
