Oh, there is the possibility of a jump in stock value this week on the news. Then people will realize Compaq would not receive the market value of a Yahoo. After that they would sell the stock off in disappointment. That would depress the stock value for a short time. After that the market would more realistically value the stock again.

Another point I don't think we are considering is the Internet companies don't have fewer shares on the market then Comapaq. They mostly traded by individuals who drive the share value up and down. Compaq is an institutional stock. Institutions own about 49% the last time I looked. The institutions drive Compaq's stock price.

Think about it.

OK folks, this appears to be part of the announcement?...

Now, if you can plug in a phone line, you can network every computer in your home. Select models of the new Compaq Presario computers are equipped with the Home Phoneline Network option. With this option, you can create a home network of at least two computers, expandable up to three computers. Home Phoneline Network does not stop there. Home Phoneline Network allows you to purchase a license that allows you to connect up to six computers together in your home. With Home Phoneline Networking, your Presario is literally plugged into the telephone jack and ready to be networked and connected to the Internet. Other Presario PCs with Home Phoneline Networking or older PCs can utilize the Diamond HomeFree network card for this function. The Diamond HomeFree network card is available in retail stores. to the Internet. For instance, using any Internet Service Provider (ISP), the home networked PC can start an Internet session, and surf to the CNN News channel website.

At the same time, a second PC on the home network can use the same Internet connection and surf to a different website. Finally, a third PC on the home network can utilize the same Internet session, and simultaneously access a third website, say, www.compaq.com, for the latest information on new Presario PCs.

Three simultaneous sessions can be started using the same Internet connection, all routing themselves independently to separate websites. This allows everyone in the household to utilize the fastest modem. Additional user licenses are available from Compaq if you want more than three simultaneous users sharing Presario Internet access.

WinGate also solves the problem of Internet security by offering a firewall that protects your Home Networked PCs from being exposed to the Internet.

Compaq has specifically worked with the Home Phoneline Network Alliance to develop a home networking capability that runs over standard home phone wiring without disrupting the normal household telephone activity. To ensure that this phone wiring technology evolves into a common standard, industry leaders in this market area have joined together to form the Home Phoneline Network Alliance (HomePNA) and define a HomeSpan™ compliance standard.

Third party adapters like the Diamond Multimedia HomeFree Phoneline Network PCI card will be available in retail stores to configure existing PCs for home networking. In conjunction with the Compaq launch of the Home Network feature, a variety of third party vendors will be offering retail products to support the Home Network. These adapter cards may be installed in most home PCs with PCI slots that will allow them to connect to the Home Network. The Compaq Home Network software is included on a CD-ROM for easy installation on all existing PCs in the home. The Home Network software may also be used to set up many available add-on cards.

Anyone know if this news is already out...or when they added this to the webpage? I believe the technology has been here for some time for the sophiscated user. Can't believe they'd let the cat out of bag ahead of 10:00 tomorrow though.

Assuming this is the significant part of the "change the way you use the internet", is a spinoff still potentially an issue?

To get the biggest bang, they would couple this with a separate tracking stock and decent earnings. What does anyone think...has CPQ's time come?
