Emory, FWIW I've had no problems running both an HP IIcx and an NP 4c in between the SCSI adapter and a zip drive. Just make sure that the chain is terminated properly after the last device.

I think the HP "recommendation" comes from the fact that they sell and support the adaptec # you were given as a PCI solution, for folks who bought scanners when they were shipped with only ISA cards (some of which no longer play nice with newer OS's or motherboards.

Were I in your position, I'd probably go for the P2B-F, unless I had reason to believe that there were particular problems with it. this will let you get the SCSI card that works best for you. I had heard of anecdotal problems with the built-in SCSI on that board. I'm sure it works fine for most, but if it didn't, you'd effectively be out a PCI slot.

Sorry it's been such a hassle.

Good luck,

Dave

I have a bit of experience with SCSI. In the digital imaging business almost everything is SCSI.
I believe the reason the HP scanner has to be the last item on the SCSI chain is because it only has one connector. This is fairly common anymore on the mid to lower end devices. It shouldn't cause you much grief, just put it last after your JAZ or any other SCSI devices. The SCSI card they are recommending is probably an entry level card with minimal functionality. I have one in one of my systems on a HP scanner amd all I can use it for is one scanner.

The JAZ drive will be compatible with almost every standard SCSI card out there, except for the most obscure ones, the same goes for the HP scanner. If I had to do it I would most certainly buy the Asus with the SCSI built in, it is a good quality Adaptec Ultra2 wide scsi. You won't need to waste a PCI slot and deal with all the issues of a SCSI card. I have SCSI built in on various boards and it is great. Plus it is usually less expensive. One downside is it is not upgradeable, other than just through flashing to the latest BIOS. But by the time new SCSI standards are adopted, you will probably want to change out the MB also.
The external JAZ drive has 2 connectors on it so you can daisy chain through it. One issue that is sometimes problematic is cabling. You will have to find the proper cables to connect them all together. Mini SCSI connectors are becoming more common, but are not yet universal. And since your MB is wide SCSI you will have to have a cable that goes from wide to narrow. I would wait to buy any cables until you have all the components. Asus may provide you with an internal to external cable in both narrow and wide.
With SCSI, cabling is the key, almost 100% of all problems are cable associated and if not cabling then they are termination. Try to not use an adapter at the end of a cable if the cable isn't the right end, get the correct cable. SCSI cables vary highly in quality, I have learned to spend the money and but the best, and that is usually not at CompUSA. I would highly recommend this site for some of the best quality cables. scsipro.com and they are pretty expensive.

Sorry to ramble on, you shouldn't have any trouble with the setup you are looking at. Let me know if I can help with any other questions.

Good Luck
Dan

Thanks for doing some digging re the P2B-F!

Ditto! I was unaware that ASUS had come out with a five PCI slot board. ASUS has a good reputation for quality. Better yet would be six PCI and one shared ISA slot.

I see now why others have sung your praises on the anniversary of this thread.

I am no more deserving than all of the others of all levels of experience (too many to mention) that make an effort at keeping this thread a first class resource.

I almost pulled the trigger today and went for the P2B-F. Then I remembered that I'm going to want a SCSI scanner and an external SCSI JAZ. So now I'm trying to figure out whether I should go with the P2B-S (SCSI is built in) OR go with the P2B-F and put a SCSI card in it.

I am considering the board myself. Built in SCSI can save you money. An add on card can be used on your next computer. I have several (collection is growing) SCSI cards so the lure of onboard SCSI diminishes for me.

HP told me the recommended SCSI card to use with their scanners is the Adaptec C6271A

Maybe that is the card they supply with their scanners. Generally scanner specific SCSI cards can not be used with any other SCSI devices. I have used AHA (Adaptec Host Adapter) cards with HP scanners for years. I have used the Adaptec AHA 2940, AHA 2920 and AHA 2940U2W with HP 2C, 2CX, 4C and 61xx? scanners without a problem. I have always installed them at the end of the SCSI chain. I did not know it was necessary.

What if the JAZ also has to be the last device in the chain? Fine mess that would be!!

I doubt it but check it out. The Mylex bt932 card is dual channel It has two exterior SCSI plugs..just like two adapters in one. Sean has the Mylex and an HP scanner. He will be back in a week or so. I just ordered a Mylex SCSI card as I am having trouble with my Ricoh SCSI CDRW drive in combination with my Adaptec cards.. on a guess (last attempt??) I am trying a different brand of card. I should know in a week or so.. $70 +/- at Minotaur and my guess is you could plug the JAZ in and the scanner without a problem.

The P2B-S has Adaptec SCSI built into it, so if the SCSI component is compatible with some Adaptec card

SCSI is a standard. If the components you buy are 'real' SCSI they should work on the Adaptec card. It is a pretty sure bet HP scanners will work. I have no experience with JAZ but find it hard to believe they would not work.
