3Com Ships New DSL CPE Solutions; IDSL, SDSL Modems Deliver Reliable, Fast Data Connections - BW, 07:30 a.m. Jan 26, 1999 Eastern SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 26, 1999--In a move designed to spur widespread deployment of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) to customers, 3Com Corp. (Nasdaq:COMS) today announced the availability of two new DSL solutions. 3Com's latest products, an SDSL (symmetric DSL) modem and an IDSL (ISDN-DSL) modem, provide high-speed, cost-effective and easily installed solutions. Today's announcement marks a significant step toward extensive, nationwide end-user availability of DSL modems. With the number of CLECs (Competitive Local Exchange Carriers) and ISPs (Internet service providers) utilizing DSL technology, small-to-medium-sized businesses, remote office users and telecommuters can now take full advantage of the benefits DSL has to offer. For example, SDSL is currently available in more than 15 metropolitan areas and will soon be available in 24 key metropolitan areas in the United States. 3Com SDSL Modem Provides Multispeed Connectivity 3Com's SDSL modem provides dedicated, completely digital, full-duplex throughput at high speeds -- at its maximum, 27 times faster than 56 Kbps (kilobits per second) analog modems -- using ordinary copper telephone wires. When connected to Copper Mountain digital subscriber line multiplexers (DSLAMs), end-users will enjoy connection speeds between 128 kilobits per second (Kbps) up to 1.544 megabits per second (Mbps). A key feature of the 3Com SDSL modem is this multispeed connectivity. During initial setup, users can initiate service at 128 Kbps; as bandwidth needs grow, their service providers can remotely increase line speeds to any of seven choices (up to the maximum of 1.544 Mbps) without additional equipment investment or configuration hassles. 3Com IDSL Modem Extends Service Range 3Com's IDSL solution uses the same copper lines associated with ISDN service from as far away as 36,000 feet from the central office -- overcoming a major hurdle of high-speed data access. With such a wide service range now available, 3Com's IDSL modem will provide an ideal link for remote offices and telecommuters. The 3Com IDSL modem provides a full-duplex, completely digital connection, using speeds of 64 Kbps, 128 Kbps and 144 Kbps. This gives users the option of maintaining their high-speed connections similar to ISDN, but with full-time connections and the benefits of flat-rate billing. The 3Com IDSL modem uses industry-standard 2B1Q line coding and can transparently pass through existing telecommunication lines, eliminating the need for additional configuration or setup. Broadband Connectivity Features All 3Com DSL solutions provide ideal connection points for today's bandwidth-intensive applications (such as file transfers, intranet/Internet access and data warehouse queries), with speeds similar to corporate local-area networks. In addition, these two DSL solutions provide "always-on" connections to the Internet or the office that are faster than traditional analog dial-up, easier to use than ISDN and more affordable than today's T-1 or fractional T-1 alternatives.
