Sun's StoreX Open Management
Platform Paves the Way for Universal Connectivity With
Jini Devices

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news)
today announced that the company's open storage initiative, code named Project StoreX, will
include Jini(TM) connection software to enable new discovery and management services for a range
of network storage devices. Jini software, also being announced today, is designed to enable
anytime, anywhere computing from a wide variety of mobile and consumer devices. When combined
with Project StoreX-compliant storage applications, Jini connection software will provide new
interoperability solutions for network storage access.

''Project StoreX, using Jini software will provide new capabilities in the enterprise that were
previously impossible, like remote storage management from a variety of mobile devices,'' said
Janpieter Scheeder, president of Sun's Network Storage. With Project StoreX, Jini software will be
able to recognize and manage storage devices across the network. This capability will provide
unprecedented levels of access to network storage and drive the integration of information
appliances which can be easily installed and automatically configured.

''Project StoreX with Jini software will benefit the entire storage industry because it offers a
powerful way to facilitate the interoperation of devices from multiple vendors,'' said Kathleen
Holmgren, vice president Storage Operations, Sun's Network Storage. ''This will create huge
opportunities for everyone in the industry.''

Project StoreX has already received endorsements from key supporting partners including Oracle,
Veritas, StorageTek and Seagate. In addition, over 150 vendors have requested details on the
development platform. Information on the early access release of Project StoreX developer kits is
available on Sun's Web pages at sun.com. Support will be available
through the Sun Developer Connection SM program, a subscription based support service for
developers.
