FT,
I agree with you. No person should own another person. I think I said that slavery was deplorable if you re-read my previous post.

But consider this. Your employer (if you had one) owns you for a period of time every work day. Your bank owns you if you have a loan. We are slaves of this present capitalist system. Ultimately we are slaves of our need for survival. And even further we are slaves of our desires, weaknesses and vices. But that does leave a certain amount of predetermination in our lives, like where we work even though we must work. How much to let the bank lend us, what vices to be subdued by.

Bob

FT,
Furthermore !! You misconstrued my meaning (for your own amusement). There are circumstances where people chose to be slaves rather than suffer a worse fate. Given the choice I would elect to become indentured, a house servant (slave) or work with the animals in the barn than starve to death or be thrown into debters prison. I was trying to make a distinction between slaves who were slaves against their will and slaves who were slaves by choice because the alternative was worse. Is that clear now!! <gg> The slaves who were stolen or were spoils of war had no choice in the matter. How many people would declare bankruptcy if the debt was paid by becoming indentured to the lender for 7 years. People would work harder, wouldn't they.
