NBase-Xyplex AcceleRouter - a Unique Internetworking Solution Increases
Existing Router Performance up to 100-fold

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 26, 1999--

With Zero Network Configuration Changes and Complete
Security Functionality

NBase-Xyplex, a division of MRV Communications, Inc.
(NASDAQ:MRVC), today launched the AcceleRouter(tm) providing existing
routers a performance improvement of up to 100-fold, with zero network
configuration changes.
The performance gains by the AcceleRouter(tm) are achieved
through a field-configurable, ASIC-based routing engine capable of
processing packets at rates of up to 40 Gbps. With this
state-of-the-art routing engine, the AcceleRouter(tm) can boost IP
data traffic throughput to tens-of-millions PPS, a 100-fold
performance increase over most popular CPU-based routers. The
AcceleRouter(tm) is protocol-independent, working equally well with
routers from all vendors.
Once the AcceleRouter(tm) has learned the network topology, it
begins to automatically perform all standard layer three routing
operations for local data, including header modifications, TTL
updates, and checksum recalculation. WAN data is passed on to the
conventional router without modification or delay. For routing non-IP
protocols, the AcceleRouter(tm) directs the traffic to the original
router to handle DECnet, AppleTalk, and any other protocols. Since
AcceleRouter(tm) is protocol-independent, it works equally well with
all router protocols, such as RIP, OSPF, or Cisco's IGRP and EIGRP.
Based on patent pending technology, the AcceleRouter(tm) requires
zero configuration changes and automatically configures itself to work
with existing network architectures. Learning from all devices on the
network, the AcceleRouter(tm) is the only router accelerator which not
only replaces the forwarding functions of the original router, but
also replicates most other functions of the existing router. This
includes the ability to perform security functions based on the
original access lists as were configured in the original router.
In addition, customers who want to monitor the operation of the
AcceleRouter(tm) have the option of management through standard SNMP,
Telnet, and the serial command-line interface (CLI).
"One of the main concerns for network managers in adopting any
new internetworking technology is the cost associated with the
disruption of network services due to incompatibility with existing
network architecture. With the AcceleRouter(tm), we are not only
selling performance, we are also selling peace of mind. True
autoconfiguration, coupled with unique capabilities to extend the
router's security, ensures network managers a complete and pain-free
network upgrade," said Yechiel Kurtz, NBase-Xyplex's Vice President of
Product Marketing, International Division.
"In addition to performance, the AcceleRouter(tm) enhances an
enterprise environment through its ability to process information
embedded at any layer within the packet. Hardware support for emerging
Quality of Service (QoS) technologies such as Differential Services
(DiffServ), allow the evolution of enterprise networks while
leveraging and protecting current architectures," added Philippe
Szwarc, NBase-Xyplex's CEO.
The product will be exhibited in a live demonstration at ComNet
in NBase-Xyplex's booth, #480.
The AcceleRouter(tm), the first of the Open Switch Router family,
ships with 24 10/100 Mbps ports and an uplink slot for future support
of Gigabit Ethernet and ATM. Shipments begin in March at a list price
of $13,995 for the base unit.
With a track record of several industry firsts, including the
first 10/100 autosensing switch, the first Gigabit Ethernet networks
and the first multi-protocol access server, NBase-Xyplex is continuing
to build on its commitment to smarter networks. Through an intuitive
vision and a passionate commitment to provide customized and
comprehensive enhancement capabilities, NBase-Xyplex possesses a full
complement of fiber driven switches, routers and access server
products that take networks farther and go faster than ever before.
With outstanding manufacturing capabilities, global service & support
and strong channel relationships, NBase-Xyplex offers a bright new
world of unlimited connectivity providing leadership in networking for
the next millennium.
