The link with MSFT is very good. They have always had superior service to AOL in the UK and very rarely break down or become sluggish with over-use (although, strangely enough, it has been happening quite a lot in the last two weeks - yesterday evening being a case in point). I use the MSN Network content and find it very good quality; their Chat rooms are not so good; the hotmail e-mail may be the largest in the world.

Howard: a Reasonable contrarian point. I guess that the news was already out and complicating negotiations. Questions about AV would have dominated the Friday meeting with analysts. This way, the strategy is laid out. Before the spin-off other big deals will be announced for content and alliances.

I think 0.38 is in the bag, which should hold any AV-related gains. It all depends on whether DEC has been accretive in the 4th Quarter as EP says it has and whether that was the 1st day or the last day of the 4th quarter!

Howie, this is purely conjecture on my part, but the timing of the announcement could very well have nothing to do with earnings, to be announced tomorrow. Instead, the timing could be purely due to the likelihood of a news leak, especially now that we know MSFT is involved in the Alta Vista equation. It is much better for CPQ to schedule a meeting for the announcement the day before earnings than to schedule a meeting for next week then have the announcement made for them, way before the meeting, through, "Unnamed sources."

For all we know, CPQ could very well have wanted to schedule the announcement at another date but scheduled it for today after being tipped-off the news was going to be leaked.

Howie.... I'm a contrarian and a pessimist, so you and I have something in common. I'm thinking that earnings will be more than .36 and less than .40 and that MAY disappoint some, but that's the only slightly weak possibility that I see right now. This next 3 days is gonna be fast-moving news and stock action so where CPQ will end on Fri. at 4pm is a mystery to me. Up, I hope. I like the company and its long-term outlook and I'm in for the long haul, so in the big picture, I should do fine. 69 in '99 would be great, but I'll settle for 60! El
