The AltaVista Company, based in Palo Alto, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Compaq. Compaq officials also announced plans to establish AltaVista as a publicly traded company.

I'm not sure where this writer went to school but "wholly owned subsidiary" and "publicly traded company" doesn't make sense to me.

Is just my pessimism or is all this hype and announcement scheduled for the day before results purely coincidental. Are the numbers maybe not as good as everyone is hoping for?
