Bob,

KLIC new orders decreased slightly and backlog dropped too...how come TER and SLB did so much better than KLIC and ASEC past quarter???? I hope COHU can post a smaller than expected loss, say 10 cents instead of 21 cents. Luck to all, Thursday! Keep your fingers crossed.

After people digest the following facts, COHU will go up very quickly.

1. (http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/TWB19990121S0022)
Intel will invest $100 million in Samsung
Electronics to help accelerate the South
Korean chip maker's production of Direct
Rambus DRAMs.

...
Intel, Rambus and some of the more bullish analysts are
predicting that about 250 million units of the Direct RDRAMs
will ship in 1999. Hashimoto said NEC managers are now
facing a tough decision: How many testers and other back-end
equipment must be ordered now to meet Direct RDRAM
demand.
...
"From the silicon point of view, changing from SDRAM to the
Direct RDRAM is not so difficult. We have shipped tons of
Rambus memories to Nintendo," said Hashimoto. "But a lot of
testers are needed. One estimate is that an investment at the
back end of about $8 million to $10 million is needed to
produce 1 million units of Direct RDRAM. If you assume that
the industry will have enough 0.25-micron capacity at the front
end, the question is whether the industry will invest the $2.5
billion or so needed to support the 250-million-unit Direct
RDRAM scenario."
...
The DRAM makers are evaluating Rambus testers now from
all of the major tester manufacturers. Hewlett-Packard Co. has
developed a Rambus tester that can handle 32 devices in
parallel, but the system is not yet completely production
worthy and the price tag is $3 million to $5 million. Advantest
Corp. has fielded a tester that can handle eight Direct
RDRAMs in parallel, and other tester companies are readying
systems for benchmarking.

Cohu and HP to Provide Integrated Test Solution for Direct RDRAMs
Washington, D.C. October 20, 1998 -- Cohu, Inc. (NASDAQ: COHU)
and its Cohu Semiconductor Equipment Group (SEG) today announced
that it has teamed up with Hewlett-Packard Company to produce
an integrated production test cell for the at-speed
volume production testing of Direct RDRAM memory ICs. The
integrated test cell, combines the testing efficiency of the
new HP 95000 HSM with Cohu's Delta Castle automated device
handler, will be shown in HP's booth, No. 2101, at the
International Test Conference, being held here through Oct. 22.

I just noted on Zacks that they are reflecting Cohu earnings for the 4th quarter as -4 cents. That is good news as they are backing out the extraordinary items. Consequently the view will be that Cohu beat estimates by 17 cents for the quarter. As we go into 1999 we should see some very healthy increases in the earnings estimate for this year. At present the two estimates for COHU March 1999 quarter are -15 cents of earnings. Usually simple logic if they beat the last quarter by 17 cents we should be looking to go positive by 2 cents. Actually the better way to look at it is that we saw a 60% increase in orders during the 4th quarter from the 3rd quarter and I bet the bulk of that was in December. Since we only lost 4 cents in the 4th quarter and orders are jumping dramatically hopefully we will see 10-20 cents of earnings in the lst quarter which would be a significant revision upward by the analysts.

As these revision start to come out and an upgrade or two we should see COHU share price accelerate and hopefully start to get back into the 50-60 range. They made $2.93 in the last peak year and I think it is possible we will see a significantly higher peak than that this time around.

Good luck to all.
