Boundless Technologies and Learningstation.com Strike Alliance to Launch Thin-Client Computing to Classrooms Nationwide
Viewpoint(R) TCs to be Bundled into Education Subscriptions
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Boundless Technologies, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Boundless Corporation (Nasdaq: BDLS - news) and the largest U.S. manufacturer of text and Windows-based Terminals and other thin-client solutions, and Learningstation.com (''LSC'') (www.learningstation.com), the country's first thin-client subscription network for the education market, are providing schools nationwide with thin-client access to a wide range of computing applications and Internet access via LSC's subscription services and Boundless' Viewpoint® TC Windows-based Terminals.
LSC will offer each subscribing school an evaluation Viewpoint TC Windows-based Terminal that will demonstrate the advantages of a total thin-client solution. Schools can purchase a wide range of software applications, including Microsoft Office 97, Microsoft Works, Math Keys, Cornerstone, Skills Bank and others.
Applications are stored remotely on clustered servers operating Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition (TSE) and Citrix® (Nasdaq: CTXS - news) MetaFrame(TM) server-based computing software. Applications are accessed on demand using Boundless thin-clients and LSC's services. Students also are provided with controlled access to the Internet and electronic libraries.
''Customers in the education industry are often constrained by limitations in budgets and technical resources, large installations of antiquated hardware, mixed desktop environments, and a diversely skilled and widely dispersed student population,'' said Steve Adams, vice president of marketing, Citrix Systems Inc. ''By helping schools centrally manage and deploy applications, Citrix MetaFrame server-based computing software helps schools overcome these limitations and quickly and easily provides students with access to the latest applications and computing resources. This gives students a competitive edge both during and beyond their school years. Together, Boundless, the Learningstation.com and Citrix can bring these benefits of server-based computing to customers in the education market.''
Boundless and LSC, together with LSC's technology partner, Computer Network Power, recently introduced 60 Viewpoint TC Windows-based Terminals into North Carolina's Lexington City Schools. Using TSE and Citrix MetaFrame, along with a mixed environment of Boundless Viewpoint TC devices and resurrected 386 and 486 personal computers, four schools within the district lowered administration costs, increased computer security and eliminated concerns of viruses and tampering. Students were provided with high performance access to the latest 32-bit applications.
Through Learningstation and Boundless Technologies, the school district agreed to a two-year pilot project in which thin-client technology was installed in two computer labs. The thin-client service uses a MetaFrame server farm linked with Citrix' Load-Balancing Services software, allowing Learningstation to ''park'' applications on a server at one of the largest pathways to the Internet on the East Coast.
''Boundless recognizes the importance and impact that online resources bring to the classroom,'' said Carl Tagge, national director of education, channel development and sales, Boundless Technologies. ''It has long been our goal to provide access solutions that eliminate the restrictive bound of traditional computing. We believe, as do our initial clients in education K-12, that our thin-client devices and software in conjunction with multi-user Windows application servers are a more cost-effective solution than traditional PCs for delivering Windows applications and network connectivity to the desktop.
''For administrators in education, this translates into a significant cost of ownership reduction, permitting leverage of technology dollars into additional hardware and software, or perhaps into the critical area of staff development. LSC's innovation in providing subscriptions, services and our flexible Viewpoint thin-clients make a very compelling total cost of ownership story for school superintendents and provide students with the tools and resources they inevitably will require in the future.''
The schools connected the Boundless Viewpoint Windows-based Terminals, via a wide area network, to the centralized file server, allowing the schools to receive fast, reliable access to the Internet and to software housed on the servers. One of the major benefits of the thin-client technology is speed, which allows significantly faster access to the Internet than the old units.
''We are pleased to work with Boundless to drive the concept and economics of thin-client computing into the education system,'' said Jim Pennington, vice president of business development, Learningstation.com. ''We selected Boundless because of their leadership in enhanced thin-client technology. We have had an overwhelming response from schools not only in the Southeast, where we initially kicked off the concept, but also in other areas of the country as well. We are planning to co-market the concept with Boundless on a nationwide basis.''
According to Jim Kirchner, CEO of Computer Network Power, the partnership between Learningstation.com and Boundless provides a unique offering to schools. ''The schools receive more education than administration,'' he said. ''A school's technology coordinator can concentrate more on enhancing technology for the educational curriculum rather than spending time fixing and upgrading PCs.''
