You are right; you can exist without FC and can do business just fine (we all have been doing business without FC for the past 20+ years). My point is that FC is become more important as companies need to improve performance or when time is critical.

FC is critical because the UNIX box is connected to the storage device using some type of connectivity; this can be a RS232 cable, ethernet connectivity or FC. The first is like piping data through a straw, the second is like piping data through a garden hose and the last is like piping data through a three-foot wide conduit! Have you ever accessed data over a normal phone line and then used a T1 line - the same type of analogy exists between FC and everything else....

More and more people are requesting fibre when designing new systems; not only the storage and machine but also over their networks... if you do not agree with this that is okay, but when you design an entire system the slowest point is the access of the data on disk drives (even when the application is designed to evenly spread the data over all drives).
