I think product rumors are responsible for the volatility

Let's face it, if Novell goes for an ecommerce version of Digital Me, it has a real product for the internet--- something that builds upon all of Novell's strengths.

But let me also mention Novell's weaknesses. This is a very conservative company and that is why Bill Gates has always had the edge. Remember that Jim Clark took some graduate students at the University of Ill. and created Netscape. That took entrepreneurial vision. Gates response was to turn MSFT on a dime, acquire a browser and repackage it as part of the OS. You don't get any medals in this business from being conservative. Novell's management style is much too cautious.

If they don't run with an Ecommerce version of Digital Me then it will be IBM or Microsoft that does --- and there goes Novell's NDS prospects.

This is marketing 101. The history of the industry is quite clear. The first company that comes up with a hot directory product for the internet makes their directory a standard.

I see it as a race. I don't know if the senior management of Novell does.
