and Multiservice Capability -
MURRAY HILL, N.J., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Pensat International Communications, Inc., a new facilities-based carrier located in Washington, D.C., will be the first to deploy the newest release of Lucent Technologies' (NYSE: LU) access concentrator offer in its global Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network, the companies announced today. Launched today, the latest release, 4.0, of Lucent's industry-leading PacketStar(TM) family of access concentrators provides the best voice-over-ATM and "any service, any channel, any time" capabilities in the market.
Pensat is deploying the enhanced PacketStar AC120 4.0 access concentrator in 30 locations across the United States. Through its Global Network Consortium, an alliance of PTTs around the world, Pensat will also implement the product in several cities globally. The company will initially transport voice traffic from carrier to carrier, eventually utilizing the AC120 ATM network to support integrated voice, data, video and Internet traffic.
"This is a major milestone for Pensat," said Philip A. Verruto, president, Pensat. "We're partnering with Lucent to rapidly deploy our ATM network worldwide. Today, the AC 120's strong voice-processing features will allow us to provide toll-quality voice, while letting us maximize the utilization of bandwidth. Tomorrow, the AC 120's multiservice capabilities will give us the flexibility and scaleability we need to meet voice, data and video needs."
The Pensat network will also use the access concentrators to provide protocol and media conversion devices for connecting international networks. AC120's element manager, AQueView(TM), will be used for element management as well as for monitoring the multiservice capabilities of the product. In addition, Lucent's NetCare(R) Data Services Group will help Pensat design, install and maintain its network, as well as its network operation center in Omaha, NE.
"Pensat's choice of Lucent's access solution to support their Global Network Consortium will help accelerate the presence of this product line across the world," said Jeong Kim, president, Carrier Networks, Lucent. "ATM access is the fastest growing equipment segment worldwide and continues to be a key area in our data networking strategy. We have combined our access and switching product line with our comprehensive network management system and NetCare support and services. This powerful mix allows us to provide Pensat and our other customers with best-in-class flexibility, reliability, cost-effectiveness and ease of management as they evolve their networks to meet voice and data needs."
Best-in-Class Voice-Over-ATM and Multiservice Features
Lucent's PacketStar access concentrator family for enterprise and service provider customers -- the AC 10, 60 and 120 -- allows users to aggregate a variety of lower speed services into a high-speed ATM infrastructure. The latest release provides one of the industry's strongest voice-over-ATM solutions through the new DSP2, a high-density voice server module for the access concentrators. The DSP2 brings significant improvements in voice with features such as silence suppression and echo cancellation, enabling toll-quality voice. The product also leads the market in voice compression, providing users up to 66 percent bandwidth savings.
Through the Enhanced DS1/E1 modules, the access concentrators also deliver more flexibility, allowing customers to support multiple services-ATM, Frame Relay or Circuit Emulation-over any channel, down to the DS0, on one single module in the system at any time.
The PacketStar access concentrator family can be deployed with Lucent's multiservice edge switch, the PacketStar MX 1000, which provides superior traffic management, a throughput of up to 10 Gbps and Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees, to provide carriers and enterprise customers a total, next-generation switching and access solution.
The access concentrators are currently shipping and are competitively priced: the list pricing of the AC 60 starts at $18,000 and the AC 120 at $30,000. The products will be demonstrated in Lucent's booth #856, at ComNet, in Washington D.C., from January 26-28, 1999.
Lucent provides a complete ATM switching and access portfolio, comprising the PacketStar family of access concentrators, AC10, AC 60 and AC120; the multiservice edge switch, PacketStar MX1000, and the market leader in ATM core switching, the GX 550. The products are supported under the Lucent OneVision(TM) network management system. Through its NetCare Data Services Group, Lucent also offers end-to-end professional services in the areas of design, integration, maintenance, and management of data networks.
