IMHO You have to hang around for the reward. I think Compaq building value in a wholly owned Internet company and then spinning it off is a great idea. IPOing AV right now would give up a great opportunity. Obewon stated the strategy in simple language.

If AV in managed well, it could have maybe a 5 to 6 billion or better value when they spin it off to shareholders. I believe that is about what Compaq paid for DEC.

no accountant here but isn't the money raised from sale of altavista sale added to the cash held by the company(not part of its earnings however). And perhaps that would increase the book value of the company.
If it retains an interest in AV it can use those shares to barter and position itself into a more "media like company". jmho.
