Yes, "..American Eagle (bullion coins) are eligible for use in retirement plans including IRAs." ("Gold Coins Haven't Lost Their Luster," Wall Street Journal, Sept. 98)

Best to check with local institutions offering IRAs for the rules and method. An outfit like Blanchard & Co. probably has contacts and information handy.
