disturbing arrogance of humans
Progress in ideas is inevitable at this point in history. The two main requirements of natural selection are filled with a repository of permanant information (books, records, computer disks) and a smaller but signifigant area of variability (the human mind, no two of which can be made to think exactly alike).

Progress is an interesting term in evolution. It means to go forth and in the common understanding it means to get better somehow. In evolutionary terms progress really amounts to change. Change which then sets a new standard. The change is not always better, but there is a tendancy for ideas which convey a selective advantage to the person who knows it, to be retained. It cannot be said that a selective advantage to a person is a better situation for all. It is certainly not better for those who do not know or understand the ideas. There is however no effective way to stop the process of change.

The most common tool to control change is though ignorance. If enough of the population can be kept ignorant and illiterate (or at least control the books) then their new ideas are much less likely to convey a selective advantage. The next most common tool is confusion. If enough conflicting ideas are instilled in a person, the chance of a useful new idea is diminished.

At the core of this impeachment circus is the group, which I call the Radicals, who were happy with the way things were, and the majority which has progressed beyond.
