Newsire, re the january effect.

January Predictor Holds Ups

Market watchers also believe the month of January will forecast the year's market outcome.
"The rule - as January goes, so goes the market - has held up pretty well," McElroy said. He drew this conclusion after looking at the stock market's history for the past 70 years.
He found that about 80% of the time, when January is positive for the stock market, the rest of the year is positive. However, the reverse does not hold - when January is negative, the market can go either way for the year.
"My only explanation for this phenomenon is that both January and the overall year are usually positive, so naturally they appear to have some kind of relationship," McElroy said.
