actually, rll, IOM didn't choose, as you suggest; it was suggested to them by the OEMs with which they were dealing at the time, a list of which can be found in prior press releases. The OEMs wanted an external device...it was their marketing, their game.

"if IOM would have stayed with their original plan, I think they'd be in a much better competitive position right now."

I must agree with you, Iomega seems to have missed any opportunity to hit a grand slam by not getting the Clik! out quicker (much quicker). Maybe a two-run HR is still out there, which will still win many a game.

However, I seem to remember that one of the reasons for the delay was feedback from the potential OEMs (and/or there were some technical problems to work out, too, I don't know). For that reason, I figure that the original plan was not viable (maybe not enough storage, maybe too expensive to produce, whatever).

I still think that the caddy idea may show up, sooner rather than later, but that's just because of that patent application which someone pointed out earlier on this thread.

IMHO, management felt that once the internals of the disk and drive were solid, they had to get Clik! out the door ASAP (because of the already long lag time), thus the external drive first. That gave the potential OEMs a chance to see whether anyone would even consider it for portable devices. It seems (from Sandy's reports) like Clik! is being enthusiastically bought up, and we should see big rollouts in OEM devices. Hopefully, the caddy will come at the same time as the Clik-inside devices, so that you will not have to plug the shole thing into your computer (like 8mm camcorders and your VCR/TV).

Yes, there is overlap between Clik! and Zip, but there are also some very different demographics between the potential Clik! owners and the hum-drum Zip owners (like me), it seems.

Time will tell. We're still in the first inning of this game.
