Declare as worthless ...

Declare them as worthless so you get the tax write off. If they ever do come back and they are worth something then you can handle the taxes at that point.

What I have done in the past is just get a print out from my broker that shows there is no trading (bid and ask of zero) on MTEI, or that it would cost you more to sell then you would get, and then I just hang onto that paper. Write the value in as worthless on your schedule D.

Important note ***

You must claim them as worthless in the year that they became worthless. So that means 1998. I had worthless stock that went South in 96 so I had to ammend my 96 return to claim it. But it was worth it.
