Wayne - your yahoo chart looks like a one minute chart which sums all the trades occurring in one minute intervals. There is a glitch apparently in this chart because it shows no trading for about 5 min. just before the 80k spike. I think it summed a period of about 5 min. to come up with the spike you saw.

I followed the individual trades crossing the ticker for the first hour of trading this morning and saw no individual trade over 4k cross the ticker during the morning swoon, the average trade size was well under 1k shares. The sharks just waited until the sellers were exhausted before moving in.

The real block trades started after the low 15's held for a while and then started slamming the ticker 20k to 50k at a pop moving the price up through the rest of the day. The smell of blood was on the street and the sharks came looking for a choice bite or two.

Most the big block action today was on the buy side. The retail bunnies panicked, were slaughtered, then sliced, diced and the bloody morsels made delicious tiny snacks for the traders to pork on after a light lunch.
