I never heard Veeck in person but I have read and heard many stories about him. He owned the White Sox when I was in high school and part of the time I was in college. He was also the last owner of the St. Louis Browns before they moved to Baltimore.

Veeck was a showman but he was also an astute judge of talent.

When free agency and salary arbitration started back in the mid '70s, Veeck was the guy who said it wasn't the high salaries for the stars that would hurt the game, it was the high price of mediocrity.
