Samsung Snares $100M From Intel
Benefit for ensuring Rambus capacity; others may follow
By Peter Brown

Santa Clara, Calif.--Intel Corp. threw more bucks at the Rambus equation last week, signing a letter of intent to invest $100 million in Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. after Samsung said it would produce half a million D-RDRAMs chips a month before June.

The financing is Intel's second major investment in a leading DRAM manufacturer in four months. The first came in the form of half a billion dollars invested in Micron Electronics, Inc. for ensuring that the company would commit to buying front- and back-end equipment for D-RDRAMs (EN, Oct.19, 1998).

Several analysts expect this to be only the beginning of this cash-for-capacity bonus that Intel is handing out to DRAM manufacturers.

"With the DRAM guys not willing to spend the money on back end equipment and get the capacity in place for Intel's processors, Intel has found a way to get them to spend a little quicker," said Steve Cullen, senior analyst at Cahners In-Stat Group, a market research firm in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Gottfried, Paul asked me to update the AMAT price chart - one year at a time. Paul, please let us know if you see something.

I took your AMAT Price 93-99 to 1/26/99 chart utilizing a ruler and prepared a grid drawing in the first of each month (Feb-Dec). All I see, IMO, is what we already appear to know. In 1994, ‘95, and ‘97 AMAT's price appeared to tail off the last of the year. In 1996, ‘98‘ AMAT dropped during Jan.

However, it appears that in 1995, ‘97 and now in 1999 AMAT took off in Jan. IMO, if we follow the same scenario this year we will be peaking out during this up cycle. If the y2k problem does not move the time table we would probably peak during August ‘99.

Your ‘99 chart indicates what we all realize. AMAT has had a tremendous jump this January. The question is, whether AMAT will be at a plateau from Feb-the middle of April before taking off the last of April-August. The market will let us know. I will be posting the DW bull %'s Wednesday.

I am glad I am fully invested at this point because to time AMAT at this period will be additionally difficult.

Just my $.02.

Gottfried, Is it possible to place the months (Feb1-Dec 1) on your AMAT price chart 93-99 so it will be easier for the thread to eye ball the chart with prices.

Picky, Picky, Picky<gg>
