As you know, I am a short. I am not currently short, so my opinions are not financially (i.e. emotionally) biased. I want to be short, but I would get kicked out of Shorters Anonymous. Noting that I am the founding member, that would be quite embarrassing.

Now, Alwayslate, Smart Investor and other shorts realize the beauty of the internet (obviously, due to the fact that we chat with you here too often), only we are smart enough however to take it to the next level. We realize that the internet is so awesome and efficient, that nobody (not Yahoo, not Amazon, not anyone) will be able to sustain a competitive advantage to generate profits to justify anything close to these valuations. This point is a fact. The only way to make profits is with proprietary content (like the networks do with Seinfeld, Superbowl, etc,) Only problem is that this costs big bucks to produce. Amazon will need to have superior distribution to win. Ooops, Fed ex is the distribution agent. Take a look as Brightpoint. They distribute wireless phones. OK business. Low margins. Value added. But no big deal. Amazon distributes books, CDs, videos. Low margins. Not much value added (strictly a middleman). Low (dare I say negative) margins.

Message to all long folks from the Guru - Don't confuse a roaring bull market with brains. If you are a trader (i.e. truly unemotional about the companies any only concerned with the ticker), that is fine. But don't make foolish statements like you just did to Smartman.

Guru.

BTW, I will bet you a buck that Q1 revenue are not higher than Q4. Unless all of those unfilled Christmas orders due to lack of inventory are being counted in January. Take a look at Musicland, Barnes, Trans World Music, etc. Seasonality is a fact in retail. I don't see how they grow through that trend. Bookmark this post and prove me wrong. I don't think I will be.

Guru.

Hey a-slate:

Always think you are the most rational bull on the board, so enjoyed your comments here. As always -- in keeping with your name -- your logic "scans." And after the last two days, despite me out $0 (Jan 00 is still far, far away), I haven't the energy or the hutzpah to repost my contrarian views. They are there in last week's posts for all to see...

I would simply point out one thing: love it or hate it, long or short or medium, this YHOO thing, ladies and gentlemen, is a market out of control. Seasoned financial journalists say it, investment pros say it, hell, Tim Koogle as much as says it. Live by the sword, die by the sword, folks. I certainly wouldn't be gloating or boasting in an environment like this, so fundamentally different than anything we've ever known before. Yes, a-slate, this is a whole new kind of commerce, communication, etc., and we both love it. We just differ on the economics of it all.

As Deep Throat always said, "follow the money." And if you do that with YHOO's near and long-term futures, you get to no man's land in a hurry...

Enough from a seasoned (and safely hibernating) bear: enjoy the spectacle of this remarkable market, make $$$ coming and/or going if you dare, and bear in mind that one day this will be a very famous story, one way or the other.
