Regarding Gregg's attitude toward ERICY -- I get the feeling that Gregg is trying to act as a Minister of Peace (Ambassador of Goodwill ? Special Diplomat ? Godfather of (Corporate) Soul ?), or just basically be "more mature than they (Ericsson) were."

If Qualcomm and Ericsson do ever start cooperating, ERICY will have to start acting in a "gentlemanly" manner, which, I bet, is probably easy for them to do (and a lot less stressful than having to "live a lie" about CDMA).

Jon.

bdog, I think Ericy should keep their shareholders honestly informed which means it will be difficult to lie only to the right people. I therefore agree with you that some shareholders will not be happy with their loss of money - having bought at the top predicated on VW40 only to find the King was wearing no clothes. Their shares are now worth much less - perhaps because people now realize Ericy was telling porkies about inventing CDMA.

Time for some guesses and predictions. How about Gregg is expecting Ericy and Q! to come to some agreement and he is automatically trying to be nice to a new partner. This will probably include some arrangement on infrastructure, giving Q! an instant profit centre instead of a loss centre and give Ericy an immediate inroad into cdmaOne and leading on to WWeb. A company structure along the lines of WirelessKnowledge or Qualcomm Personal Electronics seems likely. 51:49 = Q!:Ericy shareholdings same as QPE.

Let's face it, if there is some agreement, there is no point going on fighting an old foe which has given in and joined the club. Just as we can now be friends with Japanese and Germans despite some horrendous conflict in living memory, though not France, Iraq, Chechnya.

Ericy will agree to WWeb, with the good chip rate, the right synchronization process, and turbo coding but with a couple of bells and whistles which Ericy has come up with. Ericy will agree to an immediate cdmaOne licence at an extorquerationate price and a 5% WWeb royalty rate, which will also apply to all other cdmaOne licensees and new WWeb licensees.

They will buy MSM3000 and get right into handset design. Perhaps partnering with an existing handset producer [not Q!] such as Maxon, Samsung or somebody.

All litigation by Ericy will be stayed on all previous patents and disputes. Q! ownership of all the IP will be acknowledged. No more Texas case. Q! will stop the 'lying to people' litigation.

GSM sales will take off as doubts are removed and existing networks upgrade with some understanding of when WWeb will come in. They will make good money until it is time to overlay with WWeb. cdmaOne will also take off as upgrade doubts are removed. China will activate existing cdmaOne networks immediately, sorting out their joint ventures and PLA ownership details later. Maybe they won't build new ones until PLA and joint ventures are sorted out.

NTT will place orders for cdmaOne with upgrade to WWeb specifications to be issued not much later.

European politicians and Xena Albright, Charlene Barshefsky, Bill Clinton and Al Gore can go back to photo opportunities instead of starting a telecommunications trade war. They can still fight over bananas and New Zealand sheep imports [remember folks, the USA government doesn't really like free trade; they won't let you buy our sheeps, so don't foam at the mouth too much when Japan puts restrictions on YOUR stuff or you will look like foaming hypocrites - very ugly].

SETI and ITU can have a jamboree, some big lunches and rubber stamp the new converged WWeb standard complete with IP [internet protocol] options so son of pdQ can provide WWeb access complete with pictures. Such as the following:

It's worth checking out WirelessKnowledge demo available thanks to Northforce at:

Overall, it's the conclusion to a long and arduous development programme begun about 1985 for Q! founders and 1989 for me. Not that it is the end of progress, but we are now Alive and Kicking!

The Fun has Begun.

PS: Therefore, Q! $80 by 31 January 1999. Don't miss out folks, Wolf Ericy is at the door [with a big sack of money]. Actually, $80 was supposed to be back at the end of July, so we need to add 20% to cover the past few months which were taken up by the world's biggest financial panic for 50 years, saved by Alan Green$pan. Also to cover some ugliness in the CDMA negotiations which temporarily subdued Q! shareholder expectations. So, maybe $95 is more reasonable.
