Merritt,>>>It's an HP with a K6 330 processor<<<?

Is that k6 or k9? Sometimes cheap is very expensive.

The only way I could shut "Hal" down was by turning it off at the power surge unit.

It happened to me once last week and once yesterday, while I was running Explorer. Even Ctrl-Alt-Del didn't work. Win98 sucks. I was lucky that scandisk finished the task pretty fast.

Do yourself a favor and buy a NT workstation 4. It is sold now for maybe 30-40$ on ebay. The multitasking on NT is much much better than the Win95/98 variant. I never had to shutdown my system because of crash for the last half a year at least.
