GST I dont know B&N infrastructure unfortunately. The principle behind supply chain mgmt is to interface with your suppliers and incur no inventory or transportation costs (which are huge) on any item until after it is ordered by the end user. If I were doing the amzn design I would probably set up 4 hub and spoke distribution centers in the US that held no inventory (except some things that were consistent sellers) and work on interfacing to all the publishers directly with my POs. B&N might have some sort of automation to their suppliers but they probably warehouse books now based on some elaborate forecasting model. SCM applied to transportation and shipping costs can trim 10% off the cos for this type of retailer. I know someone at amzn but I dont know anybody at B&N so its hard to make comparisons.
