Nikon, IBM Develop Key Technology For 16GB DRAM Stepper
Tuesday, January 26, 1999

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Nikon Corp. (7731) expects to develop an electron-beam stepper that will enable fabrication of 16-gigabit memory chips, company officials announced Tuesday.

The company has developed a key electron-optics technology with International Business Machines Corp., and expects to start selling steppers for R&D use in 2002-2003.

Steppers are used to print sophisticated circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. 16GB DRAMs require circuit widths of less than 0.1 micrometer, compared with 0.25-0.20 micrometer for the current mainstay 64-megabit chips.

Existing electron-beam lithography systems print circuit patterns without scaling down original patterns; the minimum line width they can offer is about 0.15 micrometer, and their processing capacity is three to 10 200mm wafers per hour. Nikon's new stepper should be able to process 40 wafers per hour by scaling patterns before projecting them, the officials said.

I would not count on .18 to benefit Hyundai til year end.
The .22um will take some time to get to 90% yield, as Micron dealt with this yield issue since August. The market is growing faster
I think than any effect that Hyundai could have on increasing output
using .22um. The real focus is RDRAM anyway and this product looks real short in 99.
Good trading.
