The company, former known as Shanghai Huahong Microelectronics Co., Ltd., is the main manufacturer of the 10 billion-yuan Project 909, the largest IC chip project of China.
Huahong Group now has six wholly-owned or holding companies involved in the designing, production and marketing of IC chips and complete machines. Among them, two holding companies, the Shanghai Huahong IC Co., Ltd. and the Shanghai Huahong Jitong Smart Card Application System Co., Ltd., were set up in Shanghai on January 6, 1998.
The Shanghai Huahong IC Co., Ltd. with 100 million yuan of investment, is a joint venture between Huahong Group, the Shanghai Research Institute of Metallurgy under Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fudan University. It is another IC designing company of Huahong Group after the Beijing Huahong IC Designing Co., Ltd.
With the strong technological backing of the Shanghai Research Institute of Metallurgy and the Fudan University, the Shanghai Huahong IC Co., Ltd. will focus on developing IC products in the near future.
The Shanghai Huahong Jitong Smart Card Application System Co., Ltd. is based on the former Shanghai Jitong Smart Card Application System.
It mainly engages in producing IC card application systems such as IC card reader. It will help the Huahong Group edge into the IC card market and form an IC card system production capability.
The market-oriented Huahong Group aims to integrate IC chip designing, manufacturing and marketing and combine the development of IC chip with complete machines to become the largest microelectronics enterprise and a multinational group in China.
Project 909 includes the construction of an IC chip production line in the Pudong New Area of Shanghai and building of seven large-scaled IC designing Co., Ltd.
The first large-scaled IC designing company was set up in Beijing on December 29, 1998. The fresh IC designing company, named the Shenzhen Guowei Electronics Co., Ltd., is jointly funded by the State Development and Investment Corporation and Shenzhen-based SAST Enterprise Group with a total investment of 100 million yuan. The Shenzhen Guowei Electronics Co., Ltd. will devote to developing key IC parts of entertainment laser products such as VCD and DVD players. Background:
The State Council decided to launch Project 909 at the end of 1995. The government invested 10 billion yuan to build an eight-inch, 0.35-micron super- large IC chip production line with a monthly production capacity of 20,000 chips, and a silicon processing enterprise in the Pudong New Area of Shanghai.
The Shanghai Huahong Microelectronics Co., Ltd. which undertakes Project 909, was established on April 19, 1996.
The Shanghai Huahong-NEC Electronics Co., Ltd., a joint venture between the Huahong Microelectronics Co., Ltd. and NEC of Japan was set up in July 1997. Its production line is slate for trial production in February 1999.
The Shanghai Hongri International Electronics Co., Ltd., a joint venture between the Huahong Microelectronics Co., Ltd. and Japan's Toyo Menka Co., Ltd., was set up in August 1997.
It is responsible for marketing at home and abroad.
The Shanghai Huahong International (America) Co. was set up in December 1997. As an overseas subsidiary of the Huahong Microelectronics Co., Ltd., it mainly provides the latest information about the international IC technology and market, and invests in IC designing companies.
The Beijing Huahong-NEC IC Designing Co., Ltd. was set up in February 1998. It is responsible for designing and developing related products.
