Here is another suggestion for you. Have Etrade treat their Platinum users a little more seriously. We trade at least 75 times per quarter with Etrade and when they do not deliver on their promises such as with the "priority" notification of IPO's they are losing traders.

Etrade needs to focus on keeping the right customers, i.e. if they have to lose someone, lose the guy that trades 5 times a year with a balance of 3,000, not the guy that trades 1000 times with a balance of 200,000.

I am not saying Etrade is losing the good accounts, but look at what is happening to Ameritrade as a warning. I think Etrade has great potential - I am long Etrade and short AMTD for this very reasona although I am getting killed shorting AMTD this week :)

Greetings Ecom, when you said "I'm equally enthusiastic that the cost of new accounts has gone down, and am hopeful that the trend continues." I was meaning exactly the opposite. The cost of gaining new account is rising every quarter, thus only the larger and more aggressive players will be able to play that game. This is good for E*Trade IMHO, because they are both big and aggressive.

I liked your idea. I got a t-shirt from E*Trade for giving them two references, and they fulfilled the order very fast. I think they are making some very smart marketing moves and pushing the reference idea is a good one.

Till later,

E
