>>Tuesday after the close, bellwethers eBay (EBAY) and Amazon.com (AMZN) kept the
gum off their faces, announcing earnings ahead of analysts' expectations.<<
Who's expectations? I did pick up that Amzn lost only 14c, but that was due to
acquisitions. The SEC is trying to crack down on that, but I guess that's another
discussion.

James,

I just wish to place this in perspective. The same analysts that had a performa loss of 18 cents for AMZN had a breakeven to a 2 cent profit (prior to splits) for this quarter as of last January. The 2 cent profit split adjuste would be about .5 cents. That is a reduction in "profit" of 3500% in one year in expectations. Also, AMZN states losses will accelerate. These are the real estimates as they have evolved.

In very simple terms the analyst's estimates were decreased by 3500% in one year for Q4 of 98 but Amazon beat them<VBG>
