Holding stocks through earnings- Stocks like people are individuals..

<but suppose a tech stock on which a great earnings report is expected drops 5 days in a row just prior to earnings release?>>

Those are the best kind for potential growth, but the emphasis lies on the word potential but my question to you is what triggered the buy signal? I was following ASDV in my database casually for about 10 days and saw no signs of a signal. It unfortunately gave no anticipatory upswing yesterday and I'm not sure anyone picked it up. Although it gapped today I remember how much upside there is in this one so I got in. Its the kind of stock that will make up for lost ground. CLFY on the other hand was supposed to be an earnings play AND an intermediate hold (like MXTR) so I tended to ignore the recent drops.

There will be many examples in the manual I'll be putting together that will explain and tell you what you can expect. MACR I was watching as well and I did NOT see a buy signal there either. Thomas, I think if you check back to see what triggered your buy you will find your answer.

I got into SCOC yesterday because I saw the anticipatory upswing and knew the report would probably be good

<<-could 4 to 5 days of closing down be a harbinger to buy the day before earnings? >>

NO, there are no hard and tight rules of when to buy, it is as individual in every stock just like in every person's trading habits. If its down for 4 days it could be down even more after earnings. For example a stock like TLAB and ITN will have similar trading patterns, whereas a stock like AMD and IDTC will trend higher only to tank after earnings. Your answer lies in the particular technical analysis of the stock and its patterns during the last 4 quarters. ASDV was never a stock for anticipatory upswing.. It did not have it last year either. I was thinking of picking some up yesterday but it was so negative I didn't dare. Now its up 5 points.

Another point.. Usually when the watch list comes out the stocks are pretty well positioned already even if their report is 7 days down the road. That is why the 'fresh' newsletter offers opportunities. I was in CMNT,MMCN, MXTR CEFT, SCUR and AWRE more than one time as an earnings play and finally got them (except AWRE) to hold through earnings. Same thing with VSIO.. Here you have another situaiton the opposite of MACR.. It trended very well for a number of days but when it was so extremely high valued it was downgraded on valuation, so obvously you would not hold through earnings.

And Finaly, get to know the earnings plays.. "Play with them" study their historical price patterns. See how they reacted to earnings in the past. That is why I include graphs as well a a number of charts. You have to get intimate with these plays. There are only about 15-20 in each newsletter that is not much at all to get to know.

The Watch List has a couple that come up but they are usually combinations of momentum plays and earnings plays and they usually pop the very next 24-48 hours.
