LINTHICUM, MD--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 1999--

RHK Study Reveals CIENA Is Leader in Open DWDM Systems with 50%
Market Share

CIENA Also Leads in High-Channel-Count Systems

According to technology analyst firm RHK (Ryan Hankin Kent,
Inc.), CIENA Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN.O) leads the industry with 50%
North American market share of open dense wavelength division
multiplexing (DWDM) systems. These open DWDM systems are used to boost
fiberoptic network capacity. RHK's annual survey and forecast of the
DWDM transmission equipment industry predicts the North American
market for DWDM systems will grow from $1.9 billion in 1998 to $3.2
billion in 2002.
CIENA's open DWDM systems interoperate with IP, ATM and SONET/SDH
equipment and allow IP routers and ATM switches to be connected
directly to the optical layer, simplifying network architecture and
lowering the cost of bandwidth. Analysts and customers alike foresee
the telecommunications infrastructure migrating from existing legacy,
SONET-based systems toward this more efficient, less expensive
simplified network to help address the rapid growth of data/Internet
traffic.
"RHK's survey also shows that CIENA is currently leading the
market in high-channel (greater than 16) systems," said Mat Steinberg,
director of optical networking at RHK. "RHK expects this segment of
the DWDM market to see tremendous growth as carriers migrate toward
open and simplified networks."
Recently, CIENA deployed DWDM systems for both GST
Telecommunications and Enron Communications that not only increase
bandwidth, but also simplify the architecture of both networks. GST is
the first carrier to optically integrate its long-haul network with
portions of its local network using CIENA's MultiWave Sentry and
MultiWave Firefly DWDM systems. CIENA's DirectConnect technology
enables GST to do this integration optically without the use of
SONET/SDH multiplexers or regenerators. Likewise, the deployment of
CIENA's MultiWave Sentry 4000 DWDM equipment in Enron's new Pure
Internet Protocol (IP) backbone network is also a first. The network
contains no SONET, no ATM and no Frame Relay components, just IP over
DWDM.
CIENA was the first to market with high-channel-count systems and
now offers both long-haul and short-haul high-channel-count DWDM
systems. Long-haul systems include the MultiWave Sentry 1600 (16
channels) and the MultiWave Sentry 4000 (40 channels upgradable to 96
channels). Short-haul systems include MultiWave Firefly (24 channels)
and MultiWave Metro (24 channels).
