Interactive Silicon Names Jim Garrett, Former Micron Technology Vice Chairman and President, as CEO BusinessWire, Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at 10:21 AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 1999--Interactive Silicon Inc. (ISI), a start-up semiconductor intellectual property company based here, today announced it has appointed Jim Garrett as chief executive officer. Garrett most recently was vice chairman and president of Micron Technology (NYSE:MU), Boise, Idaho. "The arrival of Jim Garrett confirms our belief that there is significant potential benefit in our technology for semiconductor companies focused on improving performance by minimizing the amount of data transfer," said Tom Dye, founder, president and chief technology officer of ISI. "Our technology is especially applicable to the PC, Internet appliance, set-top box and digital television market segments, and Jim's knowledge and experience will greatly assist us in addressing these market segments." ISI designs, develops, licenses and markets technology to enhance the performance and cost-effectiveness of electronic devices such as consumer electronics, personal computers and digital televisions. The company's unique technology minimizes the amount of data transfer required, reducing memory bandwidth demand which provides outstanding performance without having to modify existing application software or software interfaces. ISI's first of many patents issued in November 1998. "Interactive Silicon has a great opportunity to significantly change the convergent consumer electronics and PC businesses with a revolutionary, non-conventional memory enhancement technology," Garrett said. "This is a fast-growing start-up comprised of a team determined to convert ideas into products that dominate chosen market segments, and nothing is more fulfilling than helping it realize its potential. I look forward to guiding the company as it endeavors to create the standard for high performance data transfer. This technology not only improves DRDRAM (direct Rambus DRAM) but synchronous DRAM (SDRAM), EDRAM (embedded DRAM), DDR SDRAM (dual data rate SDRAM) and other types of memory such as FLASH as well." Garrett joined DRAM semiconductor manufacturer Micron Technology in 1985 as vice president of sales and marketing. He was promoted to executive vice president in 1988, was elected to the company's board of directors, and was responsible for creation and management of several new business units. He was named vice chairman in 1990, also managing and serving on the boards of business units that eventually became major subsidiaries, including Micron Custom Manufacturing and direct PC manufacturer Micron Electronics.
