The letter was sent pursuant to an invitation issued on the Senate floor by White House lawyer Greg Craig: "Now we would be happy to take questions and get responses to you, consult with the President and Mr. Ruff, if you'd like to submit them." No dice, the White House now says, citing Senate rules. Despite this stiffing by the President, the Senate will apparently give him a bye, sparing him whatever embarrassment still lies in taking the functional equivalent of the Fifth Amendment.

Translation of Mr. Craig's liespeak invitation to english:

"Now we would be happy to ignore questions and not get responses to you, consult with the President and Mr. Ruff on how best to obstruct the process , if you'd be so stupid as to submit them and expect anything from us except arrogant disdain."
