Paul, I'm with you on that one. That is what I have been telling my customers and my fellow Architects (specially the ones that are putting there hopes on Active Directory - poor souls).

Corporations and other organizational entities have to move their thinking up from a physical layer to a logical layer!! It is sooo much easier to manage, control, develop policies, and secure a network if network architects work at a logical layer.

If the User is the centre of the universe instead of the physical devices then life will be so much easier.

Intel is way off base with their idea that a Serial Number on each CPU chip will be the way to properly secure and enhance e-commerce capabilities. When one thinks of an e-commerce transaction, one must look at who/what are the END-objects in the transaction. Its those END-Objects that are actually initiating and driving the actual transaction. These END-Objects are in most cases a USER entity - not a PC or computing device. My PC does not initiate an E-Commerce Transaction - I DO! Therefor, it is more important that the logic of the transaction centre around ME not my PC.

Why, because if I want to initiate a transaction from another computer or computing device, then the logic and policies will follow me (if one implements user-based logic). If we use Intel's concept then if I move to another computing device, how the hell does the next computer know my drivers if the logic is at the physical layer? Answer - It doesnt.

Novell has the right concept of working at a logical layer and they have the NDS technology to drive this concept home. They MUST now move at "Internet Speed" and put the initial Internet "Digital Me" portal into the CyberSpace so that it can be used!

I would think that once the "Digital Me" portal catches on, they should develop a service offering to private corporations to initiate Intranet Digital Me portals. Think about this...

Lets use the WIDGET company - a fortune 500 company with a nice mature NDS structure already implemented. They purchase or licence "Digital Me" technology from Novell so that when I as an employee want to get access to my Mainframe financial application, my email, my time-tracking application, my expense reporting system, etc. I can simply click on the Icon Banner within my "Digital Me" homepage for any of these systems and I get into the respective system.

Then, possibly Novell could develop a meta-directory that can link the Corporate Intranet "Digital Me" Tree to Novell Internet-wide "Digital Me" tree! WOW - sounds almost like linking Telephone exchanges. Sounds just like linking Internet Email systems. Only much more versatile.

The ideas from Digital Me are endless.

Stop me Paul, my brain is starting to overheat here!!
