The Wall St. Journal reports in its Wednesday edition that on-line merchants Amazon.com Inc. and eBay Inc. have reported breakneck sales growth in the quarter and bottom-line results that topped analysts' expectations. Amazon.com, which now sells books, music and movies on-line, said it had a $46.4-million loss in the fourth quarter on revenue of $252.9-million. Excluding merger and acquisition charges, its quarterly pro forma loss totalled $22.2-million, or 14 cents a share. Analysts had expected a pro forma loss of 18 cents a share. Amazon.com said its latest operating loss amounted to 7 per cent of sales, compared with 17 per cent in the year-earlier quarter, when
sales were just $66-million. eBay, an on-line auction house, reported
fourth-quarter earnings of $1.5-million, or four cents a diluted share, on revenue of $19.5-million. After adjusting for non-cash expenses, eBay earned $2.8-million, or seven cents a share, compared with $189,000, or one cent a share, on revenue of $2.6-million in the year-earlier period. Analysts had expected adjusted earnings of four cents a share in the latest quarter.
