AOL was mainly interested in owning Netscape's portal (attempting
to broaden their coverage to a more "commercial/business" audience).

The Netscape software products represent a side of the business that
AOL has limited experience with. Sun is the third leg of the stool.
With Sun "ensuring" the ongoing viability of the software product set,
AOL is free to be the world's most pervasive access, content and services
provider.

A very sexy, and potential mutually beneficial, menage a trois.
