Kind of like owning the parent of an Internet stock without the volatility risks involved in the Internet bubble burst ... etc..

JDN,
Don't be fooled. The market is not fooled. It is trading CPQ down on two supposedly great news days.
If you bought CPQ based on getting AV shares spun off to you, you might be selling and moving on to greener pasters right now.
CPQ owns AV now. It will own less when it IPOs it hoping for a big run up in stock price.
As a CPQ shareholder you may well benefit from this indirectly but history tells us directly is better than indirectly. A lot of "indirectlys" get lost in the balance sheet. I've owned stocks that have held great amounts of cash or stock in other companies but their own shares never went anywhere.

Jim

Agreed, a win win situation.

What I have been unable to understand is why some posters to this thread have expressed outrage at the prospect that CPQ will not spin-off AV to its shareholders. Some people basically stated that CPQ _has_ to do this, that they _owe_ us the shares. I just do not see things this way.

As you state, we win either way. Personally, I would actually rather have CPQ keep some of the shares for itself and sell the rest via an IPO. AV is _not_ the reason I hold shares of CPQ and shareholders such as myself would much better be served by having CPQ's portion of AV shares [when it goes public] add to the bottom line of CPQ's earnings and be reflected in CPQ's share price. I did not buy CPQ speculating on the potential value of AV and I am not alone on this thread--many of us hold shares that go back _before_ CPQs purchase of Digital. To be completely honest, I probably would sell most of the AV shares I receive _if_ we shareholders got some spun-off to us because internet plays are not my thing or the thing of the average CPQ shareholder.

Whatever the powers that be at CPQ decide, I am sure it will be done to best serve CPQ and CPQ long-term shareholder. Except for people picking-up shares of CPQ only because they see it as a speculative internet IPO play, long term shareholders will be 'done right' no matter how CPQ decides to deal with AV. These shareholders include the officers, board members, and other employees of CPQ and many of these people have huge holdings of CPQ, _far_ greater than the holdings of any person on this thread.
