Mardy: Are you familiar with Ericy's agreement with Zi Corp for the Chinese input interface on Ericy's new phones for China? Wonder if this is one of the "important announcements" to accompany tomorrows earnings report?

Mardy, I think TDMA will be able to be overlaid just as well as GSM will be. GSM overlay was done by Vodafone and Qualcomm in Newbury because GSM is the BIG ONE! They wanted to see that it could be done okay. GSM is just a TDMA subset, so the same thing will apply - with some electronic gizzard changes - to TDMA.

The big order just announced for the Mississippi expansion surprised some, but it just fills a big hole in a network which is making a LOT of money. So it will be paid back in a year or two, well before WWeb rollouts will be happening. It helps capture a LOT of long distance revenue. It helps develop a strong market presence. So it makes a lot of cents!

I don't take it as meaning TDMA or GSM or Ericsson are maybe able to compete with CDMA in the long run. The networks will be overlaid with WWeb to enable subscribers to get what they want.

***Argghhh.... sorry...just kidding in next sentence....already the next post says "Ericy/Q tomorrow at midday" and I haven't finished editing...*****
Ericy and Qcom are coming to terms tomorrow at midday, San Diego time, which is going to be Webtime, so we know what time it is all around the world anytime at all. Webtime will take over from Greenwich Mean Time which was fine for my great grandparents on a sailing ship with sextant and log out the back for a speedo. No good for us Web denizens - some of whom don't see daylight anyway. Not me - got an eagle the other day!! Boast! Right in the hole, nothing but net and a clang from the pin from 110 metres with a 7 iron. Par 5. First ever. Never a hole in one.

{It's been pointed out to me that my last post came across as a personal attack on ElBullshit, which was not my intention. Sorry. My intention was to get him to focus on issues rather than the people making commments - all of whom have got a valuable viewpoint and something to say, though they will have to defend what they say if others disagree. For example, the silly soft dirt theory for why WLL won't work. It's nice to be personal too, even if critical, as long as that is more of an endearing nature - such as saying Tero makes Teroist attacks - we LOVE Tero and are proud that we have got his English up to the standard to be a DeBry "columnist". We are animal lovers too and ElMatador will be loved if he would just file the tips of his horns and use them to dig up the dirt on WLL than go round goring people. With familiarity, we could even learn to love Hagfish, slime and all. We hope soon to have them tamed and eating from the palm of our hand...hmmm, maybe I'll wear gloves.

Research and development for WCDMA in China
Under the terms of a memorandum on technology and industrial cooperation between
Ericsson and the Ministry of Information Industry of the People's Republic of China (MII)
an Ericsson Research and Development center focusing on mobile internet technology
will be set up Beijing.

Ericsson will cooperate with the China Academy of Telecommunications Technology
(CATT) in an effort to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and further drive market
acceptance and opportunities for third-generation mobile Internet technology in China.
The center will be in operation by late 1999.

The agreement was signed after a high-level meeting in Stockholm between Madam Qu
Weizhi, vice minister of MII and Ericsson CEO Sven-Christer Nilsson.

GSM World Congress 1999
This year's GSM World Congress will take place Feb. 23-25 in Palais des Festivals,
Cannes, France. The congress is the premier GSM event of the year, bringing together
more than 200 international speakers and panelists, as well as operators and exhibitors
from around the world.

Ericsson will have a number of representatives participating in various panel
discussions, including, “Wireless data applications and revenues,” and “Building
foundations for third generation terminals and applications.” There will also be an
Ericsson exhibit that will display products and solutions such as: GSM on the Net,
GSM Pro, Edge – 3rd generation, WISE and WAP as well as a number of mobile
phones.

As in previous years, Ericsson will host a customer seminar in conjunction with the
congress. The seminar will be held on Monday, Feb. 22 and will include the launch of a
new product and various presentations. Customers tracking 3G developments will find
the papers on the GSM evolution toward third generation technology and GSM and the
Internet of particular interest.

Ericsson and T-Mobil sign world's first GPRS contract
In an important step for operators in the evolution toward 3G networks, Ericsson and
German operator T-Mobil (Deutsche Telekom MobilNet) have signed a contract to
implement GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) into T-Mobil's nationwide GSM
network.

The technology will enable T- Mobil to offer wireless Internet and other IP-based services
at speeds of up to 115 kbps – more than a tenfold increase from the current network
speeds. GPRS is a common step for both GSM and TDMA (IS-136) networks to handle
higher data speeds and offer 3G packet capabilities. With this common technology,
GPRS and the even faster Edge technology form a major step in the convergence of the
two standards.

ITU to hold meeting in Malaysia
On Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, International Telecommunications Union (ITU) will host a
one-day meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The purpose of the meeting is to solicit
advice from ITU members on the best way to proceed with ITU's work in IMT-2000 – an
ITU initiative designed to provide wireless access to the existing global
telecommunications infrastructure. The meeting is necessary in view of current issues
related to intellectual property rights.
