Nick, I'm no expert, but the answers to you're questions would be 1. ?Smart cards - yes, the company has specifically indicated before that they consider this a future vehicle for the Embassy technology. If you look back at the Oct '98 announcement with HP you will see that Sun Microsystems are involved in the trusted client concept to create in fact a secure smart card "reader" - sort of extreme version of an ATM in you're desktop. I believe from some statements that the company also regard having the Embassy technology integrated on the SC itself fundamentally feasible - obviously it is an open question still how that market will shape up. Wave does not have to decide which smart card OS it supports: Java supported by sun, or the Microsoft OS (which is supported) I just don't know about the Mondex OS pushed by Motorola. 2. I don't think there is much importance to be attached to whether it is a separate chip or not. It is about a patented electronic circuit that has been designed with certain functionaltiy,ie triple DES cryptography and metering, that that coulf be integrated into motherboards, I/O chipsets, TV tuner cards or set top boxes. The fact that Intel does not envisage incorporating cryptographic functions into their processors would appear to support the model that Wave proposes. People keep on raising the issue that Wave is trying to push "proprietory" technology. Of course it is bloody proprietory - why patent it otherwise. The point is they are giving it away virtually for free, to get it on every possible device. Take for instance the different fortunes of two companies that stood on opposite sides of the divide on this issue. Apple followed the "proprietory" route, Microsoft made sure first they got on every desktop by any means first, even if they have to give something away for nothing. It is the monopoly that follows that is the real paydirt. 3. ?Cost - $5 Hope that answers some ??? Yours sincerely Paul
