Why would the US want higher oil prices?

To head off economic and political chaos in such nations as Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Venezuala, Indonesia, etc. And perhaps to help the domestic energy industry to a certain extent.

Certainly the US would not want a big rise in oil prices. But a modest rise to the $15 area -- probably yes.
