Let's analyze this:

Bogey Man said, "Problem is by the time I find out Eli is negative or not so positive the free fall has occurred and I get caught in a downdraft."

If you had sold your shares and shorted the same number of shares at a price of $30, the day AFTER Ely made his negative forward looking evaluation on 10/15/97, and stayed short until his positive statements both in the earnings report and conference call on or about Oct 15, 1998, you would have bought back your short position at around 7 or 8. Then going long you would have ridden it back to the current level of about 28. Figure out what your rate of return is for this!

So where the hell is this downdraft you are talking about? Are you whining about not selling at 40 instead of 30 and not getting in at 6
instead of 8?

It seems that you are worried about the piss ants while the elephants are trampling you to death!
