I remembered I had a Citibank-Apple visa card about 2 years ago, and that carried 5% rebate on Apple product. I think they later found out they lost too much money on it, so they closed the offer. I just used those certificates the end of last year, because they were going to be expired. I think 1% is not enough to hook on people. I would rather have 1% cash rebate than 1% Dell credit.

"dell does pay something for the bank to take on the debt."

Sure, but Dell pays a percentage to any credit card issuer who's card is used to purchase a DELL system. I'd be willing to bet that the offer is free to DELL.

"i'd also bet the rebate comes from dell b/c they are the ones with
the most incentive to issue the rebate
"

Well, if my other rebate cards are any clue, it comes from the card issuer. I had a Giant (local food chain) Visa that paid a 3% rebate on purchases at Giant. I assumed that the kickback came from Giant, until that issuer cancelled our card because we paid in full each month. They said that we weren't 'paying' for the rebate. To their credit, Giant dumped that issuer, and got another bank to issue on the same terms. Recently, they cut the rebate to 1% to bring it 'in line' with other rebate cards. I'm not sure why these banks would care if it was coming out of Giant's pocket.

Now, do yourself a favor and buy some DELL. It's on it's way to 100.
